Popular Gym Classes – What’s What?Oct 2, 2018

With a gym on every corner and endless lists of group fitness training Melbourne classes available, choosing where to put your time and money can be a struggle. Whether you’re a beginner wanting to kickstart your health and fitness, or an experienced gym-goer wanting to mix things up, we’ve uncovered the benefits to some of the most popular training styles to help you choose what’s right for you!

Circuit Training

Circuit training has sky-rocketed in the last few years in the fitness industry, a favourite for many people going to group training classes. Put simply, circuit training consists of performing multiple exercises consecutively, and is great because it can be modified to suit your ability and target certain aspects of fitness.  Ideal circuit training usually targets multiple muscle groups, with a focus on high repetition, low to moderate resistance and shorter interval times.

With this double focus on cardio and muscular endurance, its a full-body killer that can be great for burning body fat and developing lean muscle tone. Circuit training is offered in gyms all around Melbourne, with a focus on group training environments. Surrounded by a group of people and upbeat music, you’ll be constantly focussed on getting the workout done with no time to procrastinate!

Strength and Conditioning

This class is offered at a variety of gyms- and for good reason! Strength and conditioning classes are structured differently everywhere, but usually have a focus on building the strength, size and endurance of muscles. This is achieved through resistance training which helps to tone and shape muscle definition, as well as a whole host of other health benefits including:

injury prevention
better posture
increased metabolism
improved balance
overall fitness
assisting with daily physical activity

Interval training

Interval training, or HIIT training, offers a workout that aims for a continuous flow of exercise at a continuous intensity. When done correctly, this type of training can be a high-calorie burner, and increase your speed, strength, endurance, motivation and overall athletic performance. Using the work-recovery-work method, incorporating some interval training into your weekly fitness routine can have amazing benefits and release those feel-good endorphins, as well as working up a sweat. Do it with a friend or jump into a class at your local gym to try it for yourself.

Boxing

Boxing might seem like an intimidating choice especially for people starting out with fitness, but most gyms offer beginner level and classes suited to all abilities. Boxing is a great way to get your cardio session in for the week, and also improves your entire body strength with all that punching, kicking and jumping. Boxing is also one of the best forms of exercise for stress release, for obvious reasons- punching the life out of a boxing bag lets you release all that pent-up frustration! Boxing with a friend is also a good option to help you work with someone at a similar level and have fun whilst doing it.

Spin

A spin or cycle class gets those endorphins pumping through your body like nothing else.

With some motivating beats to push you through the session, these classes mix up resistance and endurance to burn out your muscles but don’t leave you unable to walk the next day- after all, you can adjust your intensity levels throughout the class and work to your own ability. If you think you’ll just be working your legs, cycling is undoubtedly a full body workout that will have you dripping in sweat when you leave that room!
