Guide to Finding the Right Personal TrainerAug 6, 2018

Choosing a personal trainer Melbourne is a hugely monumental decision. This is a person who sees you every week at your best and your worst, who supports you when you’re at your sweatiest and most red in the face. You’re also placing your health and fitness in their hands, so you’d want to make sure they’re top notch. Making this decision is especially hard in Melbourne, where new personal trainers are appearing every week, each offering something new and impressive.

To make life easier, we’ve made a list of 7 things to look for (and avoid) when searching for a PT. Follow these tips to make sure the personal trainer you choose is a perfect fit for you as an individual.

  1. Check credentials and qualifications

Always, always, always make sure the personal trainer provides you with a certificate of qualification. If they can’t, don’t bother. Check to make sure the qualification is legit, too.

  1. Experience

Ask about their experience. A personal trainer who has been in the game for a bit longer is going to have more of a developed skill-set. Don’t be afraid to ask what they’ve helped their clients to achieve in the past.

  1. Personality

All the qualifications and experience in the world won’t matter if you don’t actually like your personal trainer. Book a consultation before you commit to a PT to make sure your personality and values are in line with theirs.

  1. Reputation

Do some research and ask around. Check out some of the progress their current clients have made. There’s nothing wrong with some harmless Facebook stalking.

  1. Location

Choose a personal trainer local to you. There’s no point booking someone in North Melbourne if you live in the bayside suburbs, no matter how perfect they are. It’ll just be a hassle for both of you.

  1. Speciality

Find somebody who specialises in an area suited your fitness goals. For example, if you’re looking to improve your long distance running, find someone who has specific skills in that area and has coached someone through a marathon before.

  1. Cost

Depending on qualifications and experience, costs can vary. Consider your budget and how much you’re willing to spend before you start looking. Keep in mind expensive doesn’t always mean good!

There are so many awesome personal training businesses all over Melbourne, some of which will be the right fit for you, some of which won’t be. Keep these 7 things in mind whilst you look around to make finding your perfect fitness match that little bit easier.
